The Sunday Journalist updates - changes and expansion

Why I'm doing these changes

Many writers use a pen name instead of their real name for different reasons. Some want to keep their privacy, some want to avoid being confused with other authors, and some want to create a distinct image for their readers.

I chose a pen name for my writing career because I wanted more room and flexibility in my creative expression. My real name is Coleman Mark Cooper, but I will be writing under the name Mark Coleman.

Here are some of the advantages of using a pen name:

  • It gives me more power over my brand and image. I can choose a pen name that matches my personality and writing style.
  •  It allows me to try different genres and styles. I want to include more than one type of writing or one audience. Using a pen name, I can explore various topics and forms of writing without worrying about losing my existing readers or harming my reputation.
  • It gives me more power over my brand and image. I can choose a pen name that matches my personality and writing style. I can also create a consistent and memorable online presence for my pen name.

CoPilot, Designer, Substack and Grammarly

I wrote by hand or typewriter in a journalism school about a century ago. It was easy for me to do, but technology has changed so much since then. Now, I'm exploring new ways to do my work, including social media, messaging services, and everything I have to do online.

That's why I've decided to add to my Coles Notes blog about the technologies of Copilot, Microsoft Designer, and others that have been a breakthrough to my success. I'm going to use Copilot primarily in Copiloting. It helps me with things I need help with, such as setting up the proper format for footnotes. It's a valuable tool for my writing. I will also use Microsoft Designer to create the artwork on my page. My approach has always been to explain a photograph or graphic on my page with the text I'm writing. With my background as a newspaper photographer and training in writing captions and descriptions, I can bring my stories to life in the approved Canadian Press style. It's something that I learned back in the 1970s at my journalism school.

Substack

This is a new media and experimental direction for me.  Originally, Cole's notes started as a newsletter sent via e-mail and hard copy, which evolved in 1994 to the Blog you see today. Currently, I am working on expanding my substack to a regular newsletter called View From The Plateau, which will feature selections from my blog and other media I find exciting or stumble across while gathering content.

Grammarly
Finally, Grammarly—my copy editor of superlatives—rewrites AI and helps me through drafts of my work as I free-form write on my apps.  This superb tool helps me spell-check and keep my rantings coherent.
