Cole’s Notes & Substack: Something New Is in the Ink
“Never pick a fight with people who buy ink by the barrel.”
That was the old rule of the press. Today, the barrels are digital, the presses run on servers, and the advice is simpler: never pick a fight with someone who has a Substack.
I’m currently in the engine room getting things organized for the season ahead, refreshing this site, and connecting all the moving parts. The new Substack will be called View From the Plateau.

The archive is quiet at this very moment while the plumbing gets hooked up, but fresh essays, reported pieces, and regular dispatches are rolling out this fall.
Journalism School -1975
Now this doesn't mean Cole's Notes and the Sunday Journalist will be going away.
A long time ago, back when I was pounding away on manual typewriters in journalism school, the dream was simple: work as a photojournalist, step into the editor-publisher chair, and maybe one day run an independent local paper.
Life had its detours through corporate communications and IT, but the instinct never went away:
- 1992: Cole’s Notes started as an internal email newsletter covering the telecom sector for TELUS.
- 1998: Transitioning out of the TELUS corporate world, a career counselor pointed toward a brand-new medium: blogging. Cole’s Notes found a home on Blogger, where it has stayed ever since.
- The Intervening Years: I branched out across early Canadian blogs, tech forums, early Twitter, and volunteer web writing for local communities.
Cole’s Notes has always scratched that itch to report, analyze, and tell the story. Substack represents the natural next step—a direct-to-reader publication platform with the tools to build a sustainable, reader-supported enterprise.
